Congrats! You’re pregnant. . .

. . .and that’s when you realized that there are so many decisions that need to be made.

You might have an idea of what kind of birth you’d like, but you’re not really sure of all that it entails.

Maybe this is your first baby, and you’re really not sure what to expect. I get it! I feels like a LOT when there are so many important decisions that you didn’t even know about until you found out you were expecting.

Maybe you've already had a baby, but the experience wasn’t what you’d hoped for and you’d really like it to be different this time around.

You want to talk through your options with someone who understands the ins and outs of pregnancy

You want to know how to manage labor because all you know is Hollywood’s version and you don’t want it to be that way (it doesn’t need to be)

At the end of the day, you want what we all want, to feel safe, cared for, and supported throughout your birth.
That’s not asking too much, mama! You can have that!

What is a doula?

A birth doula. . .

  • Recognizes birth as a major life experience that the mama will always remember and carry with her into motherhood

  • Understands the physiology and emotional needs of a laboring woman

  • Assists the parents in birth planning and carrying it out

  • Gives continuous support to the laboring women throughout her entire labor and birth

  • Provides emotional support and comfort measures as well as information and decision support

  • Is a calming presence in the room

  • Is fully committed to the mother’s comfort without other responsibilities

  • is NOT a medical provider and does not replace OBs, nurses, or midwives

Your birth partner has their own concerns and emotions about the day, and your providers are attending to medical duties and monitoring your baby.

Your doula will be completely focused on YOU and your comfort regardless of what else is going on in the room.

Research studies have observed that a positive birth experience isn’t based on exactly how events unfold, but on how a mom feels supported, heard, and included in decisions.

Great Reasons to Invest in a Doula

You’re a First Time Mom

We usually have no idea about all of the details of pregnancy until we’re in it (even if we have friends and family with kids). A doula can help guide you through the big day.

A Previous Birth Wasn’t What You’d Hoped For

In the case of a challenging past birth, a doula can give you some peace of mind. Whatever your next birth holds, you can know that someone will be right beside you continuously with your well-being as her only focus.

The Dad Is Nervous or Uncomfortable Around Birth

He may absolutely want to support you, but he has his own worries and discomforts. He would like to have help in the room at all times, and to be reassured of what “normal” labor progress looks like.

You Want One!

Maybe you’ve had smooth births so far, and then you found out what a doula was and thought it sounded great. Well, it IS great, and you wanting one is a fantastic reason to have one. : )

Compared with women who had no continuous support, moms who had continuous support were:

  • 28% less likely to have a c-section

  • 31% less likely to use synthetic oxytocin (Pitocin) to speed up labor

  • 9% less likely to use any pain medicatoin

  • 34% less likely to rate their childbirth experience negatively

These effects were strongest when the support was from a person who was not hospital staff or a friend or family member of the mom

A doula can help you have the birth

experience you desire.

Doulas are for all women, not just those seeking an unmedicated birth

I don’t believe there’s a right way to birth, which I why I love exploring the mama-to-be’s priorities, interests, and worries so that we can come up with a plan that aligns beautifully with her specific desires.

I believe a successful birth is one where the mom and baby are healthy AND the mom feels good about how everything happened.

A good birth is MORE than “a healthy mom and a healthy baby.”

Why is Leslie the right person

support me in this special moment?

I’ve had three very different births. In one, my water broke before labor started at thirty-seven weeks. For the second, I induced at forty-one weeks. And the third labor started on its own one day before my due date, and I had my first unmedicated birth on Christmas Eve.

I was a prenatal exercise specialist, and I wanted to know everything I could about birth physiology so that I could better prepare my clients for labor.

And then I fell in love with doula support! It wasn’t planned to happen that way, but sometimes love surprises us. : )

Because of my background in exercise, I bring a biomechanical approach to labor and focus on moving positions and using physiology to help baby more toward birth. The cool thing is that there are great positions for unmedicated or epidural-using mamas.

Besides my exercise background, my faith is the most important thing in my life. So if you’d like me to pray with you and over you throughout you’re labor, I am all about that.

I know this is a super intimate moment in your life, and you absolutely should judiciously protect who you allow into that space. I’m honored that you’re considering me, and I’d love for you to set up a meeting so that we can get to know each other better.
